Anticipation, excitement, clenched jaws, countdowns, and mini-melts are a few words that come to mind when we think back to September 26, 2020 – the day Undisturbed was launched. Well, just find a good seat and ride down memory lane with us for a bit.
It’s a foggy fall morning marked by a whirlwind of emotions. We’re three hours apart and in different time zones, as one of us (daughter) is a second-year college student, and one of us (mom) is a full-time nurse practitioner. The world ran on video calls around this time, and our small business wasn’t any different. After a series of “face-to-face” meetings, launch time drew near, fear became distant, and we were ready to push the post button to launch our … you guessed it – lip products!
Today, our pivot is evident, but our mission of promoting wellness and self-care has been constant. Today, those feelings we described in the beginning have their bouts of constancy, but are more often than not are replaced by gratitude, conviviality, and wonder.
As we celebrate and reflect on five years, we’d like to share five things we’d go back and tell ourselves:
The Beginning
1.) Trying to build a lipcare brand based around self-care in 2020? We know we know … sounds unique, but we were heavily invested in our mission. So much so the fact that everyone’s lips were behind a mask was an afterthought. We would quickly transform our livingroom into a lab filled with spatulas, mixing bowls, and color swatches.
There’s No Product Without Patience
2.) When we did pivot to body care, it took TIME. We thought we were going to have cute floral soaps. This idea, like many we had at the time, sounded good but looked bad. However, even the soapmaking process reminds us to be patient. After soap is put into the mold, it has to sit in the oven overnight and then it’s taken out to sit for another 24-48 hours. After, it’s cut, you wait approximately four weeks for it to finish curing before it can be used.
All Hands on Deck
3.) Though Undisturbed was created by the two of us, it was the help of our loving family who’ve helped us sustain our baby. In the summer of 2021, we would fill our calender with local vendor events without truly knowing how much of a commitment this was. Our 5-year-old nephew/grandson at the time made history as the role first-ever Chief Labeling Officer. While an influx of cousins and our aunt would from across town to help us package lip balms and bath bombs.
Connections & Community
4.) Now those local vendor events that I previously mentioned can be very hard and time consuming but after a couple of conversations, we’re reminded why we get up bright and early to do them. Some of our best laughs and learnings have been from a Delta who’s made shower steamers her favorite part of the day and a soaplover from New Zealand who made a quick stop in Indiana. There have been shows we’re only one sale was made but four enduring, heartfelt relationships were cultivated.
The Support that Keeps Us Going
5.) Hopefully, this resonates whether you started something 5 years or 5 seconds ago. Starting something from a blank canvas may leave you feeling overwhelmed and depleted but don’t let it make you feel defeated. This is easier said than done but you never know who needs what you have or who’s rooting from you. Whenever we’re running short on faith, we always talk about how our aunt and uncle flew in from Alabama to help us prepare for the Black Women’s Expo – our biggest event to date. We also never fail to remember the wonderful woman who came over to bless our table and tell us how much she believed in our products. Those who support us so vehemently will always have a special place in our hearts.
Here’s to 5 years and forevermore.
Thank you to our Nspirers for supporting us and trusting our indulgences to soothe your skin and set the tone for your day.
